I am the mother of a 13 year old boy, Alex, with Down Syndrome. Raising a child with special needs is both challenging and rewarding, but unless you have experienced it first hand, it is hard to fathom the minute by minute, hour by hour and day by day situations that arise. Some of the stories I have shared with people have brought tears of laughter as well as sorrow, so I decided to share parts of my journey, maybe to enlighten, maybe as a little bit of self therapy. Hope you enjoy!

My sister just reminded me of a really cute thing Alex did to her when we were on vacation this summer - he had been goofing around with her, rough-housing a bit and walked up to her and totally out of the blue held out his hands and said,"Auntie, can I have this dance?" It was so cute and unexpected! They danced for a couple of minutes and after she hugged him and thanked him for the dance he told her she needed dance lessons, that she wasn't that good, and that he would give her one the next day! These are the moments that keep me going....

Just to add to that story.....Alex came to my cottage bright & early the next morning, dragged me to the tennis courts & said "OK Auntie this is your first dance lesson" we danced for about 10 minutes. Apparently he rendered me hopeless because he finally sighed & said "let's just play ball Auntie". God I love that kid!!!!
